Brighter Tomorrow at Origin
Brighter Tomorrow at Origin has a similar objective to Fairtrade however it operates slightly differently. Rather than just paying a basic standard price (as with Fairtrade) we work with the farmers from each co-operative to help them improve the quality of their product, in turn allowing them to command a higher price for their whole yield. We source our Brighter Tomorrow at Origin coffee directly from the co-operatives and have established long term relationships with each community. In addition, the Kenyan co-operative that we purchase our Kenyan Dawn coffee from is also UtzKapeh certified; a scheme that ensures key social and environmental standards are met.
Brighter Tomorrow at Origin is available on Kenyan Dawn coffee and Malawi Garden tea.
Kenyan Dawn
In Kenya, Brighter Tomorrow at Origin helps over 2,500 small-scale farmers on the Ndumberi Co-operative to improve the quality of the beans they grow. We also contribute additional funds regularly, which in 2007 were used to construct and fund a health clinic. This included providing equipment, furniture and also paying for the wages of five health staff until the end of 2008 when the clinic will become self-sufficient. We are also funding a new quality testing facility for farmers on the Kenyan estate.
Malawi Garden
In Malawi, one of the World’s poorest nations, Brighter Tomorrow at Origin supports tea producers from the Kawalazi plantation. In 2008 we will continue to fund projects including investing in agronomic training for farmers and initiating tree planting and land rehabilitation.
